Is a bank account an investment? What about a collection of fine art, cryptocurrency or a loan to a family member? The answer isn't always obvious. An early lesson that helped the Wealthy Barber define what is (and what isn't) an investment is remembering that they fall into one of two categories — "own" or "loan" — and that applies to everything from stocks and bonds to ETFs and gold coins.

David Chilton, author of best-selling personal finance guides The Wealthy Barber and The Wealthy Barber Returns, and former dragon on CBC's Dragons' Den, shares a way of thinking that can help you better understand your investments. Find out more in the video above, which is part of a series produced in collaboration between RBC Wealth Management Royal Trust and David Chilton.
